Do you like it when someone explains to you his/her business in 15 minutes? Woho... NO, sir!

In one of the Startup Weekend in Poland, during three days teams had been working on their startups in order to pitch to investors. In the beginning, one team was asked to explain their idea to organizers. They spent around 15 minutes to do so. At the end of the event, they explained the same idea in 5 seconds!

If you ask people around you to explain what their company does in a few words, most of them will have a problem…

Everything can be explained in few words

Why should you explain your business in a single sentence?

  1. Imagine, it is like a toast that your mates need to cheer and spread.

2. Your clients need it to refer to you.

3. Investors need it to explain to other investors what is your business about.

4. The press needs it for their titles to describe what you do.

How to do it

There are different methods on how to build this one sentence. You can use any of them.

Wolves Summit in the north of Poland was the main event of representatives of the European startup ecosystem. Guests from Silicon Valley(SV) gave us training on “How to pitch”. During the session, they asked some entrepreneurs to explain startups from their seats. Each of them spent 2–3 minutes to do it. After 4–5 pitches the guests from the SV got upset that almost nobody was able to explain their startup in a single sentence.

After 5 minutes of discussion they typed a structure of a great pitch in the size of a tweet in smartphone and showed us:

My company (company) is developing (a defined offering) to help (a target audience), (to solve a problem) with (secret sauce).

Rodnay Sampson https://twitter.com/rodneysampson “a tweetable pitch”

This came from the Founder of Founder InstituteAdeo Ressi and still being used by thousands of entrepreneurs to explain their business to the world.

Let’s use this method and explain some startups with “a tweetable pitch”.

For example, here is “tickets online reservation” startup:

Gela Tickets Ltd is developing the most user-friendly web page to help music festival fans to book tickets of popular festivals in Georgia based on their purchasing history.

Few sentences which includes all the aspects of business...

Let’s explain www.CreditAmazon.ge

CreditAmazon.ge helps online shoppers in Georgia to buy products from popular online shops and pay with monthly installments.

facebook.com/creditamazon

Other popular businesses in one toast.

Cisco — “We network networks”

Instagram — “Facebook of Photos and small videos”

and many others…

Also, it depends on who is the audience of this sentence. For instance, if we explain Youtube for investors and employees we can say “Portal of Videos” and if we target users we can say “Broadcast yourself”.

It is pretty when you explain your organization, your function or just your purpose in life with a single sentence.
